To make this mission even more interesting, consider framing it as a "green revolution" that inspires and engages communities across the world to take action for a healthier planet."
Planting of 2 million trees with the aim of increasing the forest density and forest cover in Sri Lanka under the theme "To Protect Environment" a joint program initiated by the State Ministry of Rural Roads and Other Infrastructure with the Ministry of Highways, Road Development Authority, State Development and Design Corporation and Maga Neguma Institutions. It is currently being implemented island wide.
The purpose of conducting this project is, increase the tree coverage mainly considering the alongside the road system in the country by helping the green back mother earth.
Trees are the lungs of our planet. Trees absorb Carbon Dioxide the main component of Global Warming and release clean Oxygen for us to breathe. A fully grown tree can absorb approximately 22 kg of Carbon dioxide annually. A single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insects, fungi, moss, mammals, and plants. Trees play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters like floods and landslides. Their tricky root systems act like filters, removing pollutants and slowing down the water’s absorption into the ground.
Trees have been shown to improve mental health and cognition in both healthy and individuals and those suffering from mental illness, and trees provide an attractive living environment for people through urban beautification and landscaping.
Sri Lanka previously heavily forested. Due to rapid development the country facing a huge deforestation phase and this could directly and indirectly impact on climate change, biodiversity, food chains, also human health in many ways.
As the outline of the project, the major pilot program is being implemented by the State Ministry and collaborative programmes with other organizations are linked to the central program. Tree planting maintenance program will be supervised and monitored by the State Ministry.
We at AFC have partnered with the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT), founded by reputed ecologists and conservationists Anjali Watson and her husband, Dr Andrew Kittle, to foster co-existence in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka among people and Leopards- the largest cat in the country
The project is centered on protecting an 18-acre ridge in the Central Highlands (declared a World Heritage Site in 2010), and home to 28 identified Leopards and 35 other species of flora and fauna. This ridge is also a vital catchment area for main reservoirs in the area.
As a result of all the effort that everyone put together, amount of the Hill country Leopard has been increased within certain areas in Sri Lanka.
